Comparison

Vyra vs Cal AI.

Two apps that count calories from a photo. What each one does, what each costs, and what each says about your data, checked against the store pages and the companies’ own sites on 17 September 2026.

Last checked 17 September 2026. Prices, ratings and features change; the store pages are the source on any given day.

The short version

  • Both count calories from a photo, a barcode or a typed description. Cal AI’s site lists calories, protein, carbs and fat; Vyra counts those plus fiber, sugar and sodium, and marks anything it had to estimate so you can correct it in one tap.
  • Cal AI is the established app: 4.8 from about 365,000 ratings on the US App Store and 1M+ downloads on Google Play on the day we checked. Vyra launched in August 2026 and has few ratings yet.
  • Both are subscriptions. Cal AI’s site offers a 3-day free trial; Vyra gives 7 days free where available. Neither describes a free tier.
  • On data, the two companies say different things. Cal AI’s terms grant it a licence to use your content “including training AI models” and its privacy notice says it “may engage in targeted advertising”. Vyra does not sell your data, does not use it for advertising, and does not use it to train AI models.
  • Vyra keeps your food beside your weight and your steps, reads from and writes back to Apple Health and Health Connect, and works offline first. Cal AI connects to Apple Health and Google Fit.

What each says about accuracy

Cal AI’s FAQ says: “CalAI is about 80% accurate. No food tracking app is perfect, and calories and nutrition values can vary.” Its Google Play description says “Insanely accurate”, and its terms say results “are automated approximations and may be incomplete or inaccurate”. Those are Cal AI’s words about Cal AI.

Vyra does not put a number on it. What Vyra does is show you which numbers it measured from a match in its food data and which it had to estimate, and let you correct either in one tap. It learns your usual portions from those corrections. The app page lists what Vyra counts and how you correct it.

Your data, in each company’s words

Cal AI’s terms (last updated 28 November 2025) grant the company “a worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable license to use, reproduce, analyze, process, modify, publish, and create derivative works from the User Content to operate and improve the Service, including training AI models.” Its privacy notice (effective 21 May 2026) says: “While Cal AI does not expressly ‘sell’ information to others, certain uses of Functional Cookies and/or Targeted Advertising Cookies on our website to collect, use, and disclose information may constitute ‘sales’ or ‘sharing’ of personal information”, and “We may engage in targeted advertising.” Its App Store listing lists “Identifiers” and “Usage Data” under “Data Used to Track You”.

Vyra’s position is shorter: your health data is encrypted and isolated to you. We do not sell it, do not use it for advertising, and do not use it to train AI models. The detail is in the privacy policy and the consumer health data policy.

Where the two differ most

If you want the app with the longer track record, that is Cal AI, with hundreds of thousands of ratings on each store. Vyra is new, and the ratings will tell that story for a while.

If you want more than four numbers per meal, the estimate marked as an estimate, your steps and weight on the same screen as your food, an eating window, and an app that writes what you track back into Apple Health or Health Connect, Vyra does those today. If what happens to your photos and your data matters to you, read both companies’ policies; the quotes above are the relevant lines as of the check date.

Vyra is your AI health copilot. It is informational, not medical advice.
